The beneficial use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) can help develop technologies capable of preserving the privacy of citizens and institutions, according to the Minister of Telecommunications, Information Technologies and Social Communication, Mário Oliveira.

For the person responsible, who was speaking at the opening of the seminar on “Personal Data Protection in Angola; Overcoming Challenges and Exploring Horizons, organized by the Data Protection Agency (APD)”, informed that the processing of personal data constitutes the essential basis for human activities, highlighting, especially, those within the scope of the Digital Economy, which occur in all countries.

Mário Oliveira emphasizes that it is necessary for all stakeholders in society, public and private, to work in harmony and adopt a culture of transparency, so that citizens have a clear perception that data is being treated in an ethical and safe manner.

According to the government official, the inappropriate collection, storage and use of personal data can cause serious consequences in people's lives, compromising not only privacy, but also freedom and dignity as a human being.

According to the minister, the abusive use of emerging technologies, namely AI and Facial Recognition Technology, has social, economic, legal and ethical implications, and can be misused in discriminatory practices.

The government official also called for collective action to build a safe society, based on technological infrastructure, institutional capacity, awareness and education of citizens, in order to reduce negligent attitudes.

In the minister's opinion, investment in more adequate security is necessary, in particular Cybersecurity, for an environment favorable to everyone's lives, promoting the perception of privacy adjusted to ethics and fundamental rights.

The seminar was attended by national and international experts, with experience in this sector.
