At the end of 2011 Microsoft made an agreement with Samsung for the use of some Android patents in the devices of the South Korean company. The deal was quite profitable for Microsoft, until Samsung decided to stop compensating Microsoft.

Android is an open platform developed by Google, which does not charge license fee for the platform itself. The point is that licensed patents provide greater security, since if patent infringement problems occur, the company that has licensed pays compensation.

The issue between Microsoft and Samsung began to get complicated when Microsoft acquired the mobile division of Nokia, causing Samsung to stop paying royalties to Microsoft.

According to the document released by Microsoft:

Samsung broke the licensing agreement by refusing to make payment on the second fiscal year on the date and then refusing to pay interest on the delay and threatening to break the licensing agreement

Now it remains to be seen how far this patent battle goes.
