Netflix explained how it will prevent account sharing

2026

A Netflix announced last year that by 2023, would take steps to prevent subscribers from sharing service accounts. The initiative was confirmed again this year and, now, Netflix has shared on its own website how it will prevent an account from being shared by people who do not live alone.

The company adds that it will use information such as IP address, device identifiers and also account activity to determine whether a device linked to an account is linked to the primary location.

If a new device is connected to the account from a different location, Netflix will require a temporary code that allows access for seven consecutive days. The company notes that account users using the "primary device" should have no problem using Netflix in other locations.

BUT: Netflix account sharing has its days numbered

However, for other devices to have uninterrupted access to Netflix, they must connect to the account's primary location Wi-Fi at least once every 31 days.

“To ensure uninterrupted access to Netflix, connect to Wi-Fi at your primary location, open the Netflix app or website, or watch something at least once every 31 days. This creates a reliable device so you can watch Netflix even when you're away from your main location."explains Netflix"If you are away from your main location for an extended period of time, your device may be blocked from Netflix. You can ask for a temporary access code to continue watching".
