New Emojis from Microsoft Are Now Available in Windows 11

A Microsoft decided to make their style emojis available fluent on Windows 11 this week. A new optional update for the operating system is due out soon, including a number of important bug fixes and the new emoji that Microsoft unveiled earlier this year. While it's a brand new style, it's not the 3D look that Microsoft previously promised, the company has opted for 2D.

The new emojis in Windows 11 include the return of Clippy, as Microsoft replaced the default paperclip emoji with its character Clippy🇧🇷 The emoji have also been redesigned to include bright, saturated colors, but lack the 3D aspects that made them stand out.

BUT: Microsoft says it will end OneDrive updates for Windows 7

"The new emoji style is only available on Windows 11 and is 2D," explains Microsoft. “We still offer a variety of emojis [sic] for Windows 10 customers.” This same blog post even points out that Microsoft "opted for 3D designs over 2D and chose to animate most of our emojis."

Difference between emojis

It's unclear if we'll ever see the stunning 3D emoji inside Windows 11 that Microsoft demonstrated earlier this year. The lack of 3D could be related to technical limitations of Microsoft's color font format that the company uses to display emoji within Windows. While Apple uses bitmaps to render your emoji Microsoft uses a vector format which is much more scalable and has file size benefits if your emoji are flatter.
