The information communications technology (ICT) sector of the Niga © ria increased the country's gross domestic product (GDP) to 14,07% during the first quarter of this year, reported the data agency, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) in its latest report.
NBS said that the country's GDP grew 1,87% in real terms, while the non-oil sector contributed 90,50% to GDP during the period, against 9,50% contributed to the total real GDP in the oil sector.
Nigeria's Minister of Communications and Digital Ecionomy, Dr. Isa Pantami, said that the ICT sector's growing contribution to GDP is a direct result of the concentrated and committed effort of President Muhammadu Buhari's administration.
He said that the strategic directions of the Federal Government's policy include the inclusion of the Digital Economy in the Ministry's mandate, the inauguration and implementation of the National Digital Economy Policy and Strategy and the National Broadband Plan, among others.
"The COVID-19 pandemic showed how the ICT sector is critical to the growth of our country's digital economy and, by extension, to the economy in general“Said the minister. He urged other sectors of the economy to take advantage of the federal government's new focus on the digital economy in order to enable and improve their processes through the use of ICTs.
