Windows XP is one of the most used Microsoft operating systems in the world (this is if it is not the most used).

A Microsoft on 04 April 2016 day completed 41 years of existence, and in 08 of April of 2016 the Microsoft Windows XP has completed 2 years since Microsoft stopped giving its support. That means that anyone who insists or is using XP, and discovers a serious error, Microsoft will not fight to solve it.

Although I migrated to a MacBook Air 13 running Mac OS X El Capitan, I still have a Dell D610 stored with Windows XP Pro with Service Pack 2.

Windows XP was released on 2001. It was the most used Windows in the world and even in 2011 it was still in 75% of the computers, although it stopped receiving 08 April support of 2014, it is no wonder that it is still on a good number of computers in the days of today.

Like Windows XP, Office 2003 also stopped receiving support from Microsoft. We only have to remember the success and joys he gave us, without forgetting the frustrations we went through with his famous “Blue error".

Stay with some curiosities of the darling Windows XP.

  • Bliss, the Default Windows XP Wallpaper (Desktop). This place really exists, it was a photo taken by Charles “Chuck” O'Rear in 1996 and then sold to Microsoft for an undisclosed amount, but apparently, it is one of the highest prices ever paid for a single photo.

  • In addition to the versions quoted above, other versions and modifications appeared in time:

Windows XP Starter Edition (with sales restricted to some countries) is a low-cost version of Windows XP evaluated for developing countries like Thailand, Turkey, Malaysia, Indonesia, India, Colombia, Brazil, Argentina, Peru, Bolivia, Chile, Mexico, Ecuador, Uruguay and Venezuela. It is very similar to Windows XP Home, but is limited with specific hardware and can only run 3 programs in 3 windows at a time and other features have been removed or disabled by default. According to Microsoft, the Starter Edition is "an introduction to the low-cost Windows XP operating system designed primarily for Desktops for users in emerging countries."

Windows XP Edition N (sold only in Europe, without Windows Media Player Installed) in March 2004, the European Commission fined Microsoft € 497 million ($ 704 million) and ordered Microsoft to provide Windows versions with the Media Player Installed .

O Windows XP K and KN, in December 2005, the Korean Fair Trade Commission ordered Microsoft to make available Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 editions that do not contain Windows Media Player or Windows Messenger. Like the decision of the European Commission, this decision was based on the argument that Microsoft had abused its dominant position on the market to push other products to consumers.

Support and Service Packs:

Microsoft has, over time, released 3 Service Packs (Service Packs) to fix some errors and additional new features.

  • 1 Service Pack (SP1): 09.09.2002 - 10.10.2006, Being that the most noticed feature in this SP was the USB 2.0 support
  • 2 Service Pack (SP2): 06.08.2004 - 13.07.2010, SP2 codenamed “Springboard” with greater emphasis on security, it added new features to XP, including the installation of a firewall, support for Wi-Fi, pop-up blocker in Internet Explorer , and Bluetooth support. One of the biggest security features added was Windows Firewall which was enabled by default. Other new features included in the package were Windows Media Player 9, DirectX 9.0c and Windows Movie Maker 2 with a new interface, video effects and options that were incorporated into the program.

XP lifecycle and its Service Packs

Even after the launch of Windows Vista from December 2008 to January 2009, Windows XP was available on the market for a period of 12 to 24 months. On April 14, 2009, Microsoft extended the support period for Windows XP until 2014. However, in January 2014, Microsoft stated in its Blog that Microsoft's Anti-Virus and Anti-Malware programs such as Microsoft Security Essentials will be supported with Windows XP until July 2015. See below the closing dates that Microsoft has announced:

  • Windows XP RTM (no Service Pack): support completed on 30 in September of 2004.
Windows XP Service Pack 1: end of support, 10 October 2006.
Windows XP Service Pack 2: end of support, July 13, 2010.
Windows XP Service Pack 3: end of support, 09 April 2014 together with Office 2003 SP3.

Windows XP ended support on April 8, 2014. Even so, some programs like Security Essentials will only end support later. Windows XP officially closed on July 14, 2015, along with its Microsoft Anti-Malware and Antivirus programs such as Security Essentials.

After 13 years as the main operating system on thousands of computers, it has just turned 2 since Microsoft abandoned its support. XP was a revolutionary system in the world of technology. Although some people still use it, it is not advisable since there are many hackers who are taking advantage of these more lay users and who use older or not updated systems, and with little knowledge to carry out an attack. I just use it to perform simple tasks, like listening to some music for fun, or remembering some programs, as I said above, my main laptop is a MacBook 13.

We must listen to Microsoft's advice and Shut Down XP, whatever the version. It is the end of an era.
