Angola to gain drought monitoring system

The Angolan Government will launch next month an Agricultural Drought Monitoring System, with the aim of improving the capacity to respond to the impacts of this natural phenomenon in the country.

Code-named Agricultural Water Stress Index System (ASIS), the technological platform will be launched at a National Workshop and is part of the financing mechanism of the Green Climate Fund (GCF) and has the technical support of the United Nations. for Food and Agriculture (FAO).

According to a statement from the Ministry of Telecommunications, Information Technologies and Social Communication (MINTTICS), the ASIS implementation process is in the final calibration phase, the tool of which is being adapted to local conditions and at the level of the administrative units of municipalities throughout the country.

It should be noted that a specialized inter-institutional technical team will work with ASIS, which brought together specialists from the National Institute of Meteorology and Geophysics (INAMET), supervised by MINTTICS, and the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (MINAGRIF).

The note also adds that the Government is, since January 2021, engaged in the implementation of the Agricultural Drought Monitoring System in Angola, whose objective is to produce information that allows monitoring agricultural drought and managing its risks in the country, using satellite data to detect cultivated areas that could be affected by this phenomenon.
