Anonymous Sudan attacks again and this time in Uganda

Anonymous Sudan, a group of Sudanese hackers, attacked another East African country, this time Uganda.

Earlier this year, the organization attacked most digital services in Kenya. The group claimed responsibility for a series of distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks on media outlets, hospitals, institutions and businesses in Kenya.

Nigeria followed; in August, the organization claimed that a similar attack had been launched against MTN Nigeria, the country's main telecommunications company. Now, Anonymous Sudan has claimed responsibility for a DDoS attack that affected mobile service providers in Uganda this week.

The main operators, Airtel, MTN and Uganda Telecom, have recorded all the problems. Anonymous Sudan stated that this attack targeted companies supporting the Rapid Support Forces in the civil struggle against the Sudanese Armed Forces.

The following live data from NetBlocks shows that Uganda has indeed experienced disruption.

Both Uganda Telecom and MTN recorded declines, but when the data was collected, Uganda Telecom was back at 98%, but MTN was still at 34%.

It was not possible to determine how Uganda and mobile operators are involved in the conflict that has ravaged Sudan since April last year.

“We launched a fatal cyberattack against the infrastructure of most of Uganda's telecommunications network,” Anonymous Sudan claims in a cryptic message.

Additionally, the group claims to have carried out a large DDoS on Kenya's educational infrastructure. “Attacks against Kenya will continue as they continue to support the genocidal Rapid Support Forces in Sudan,” he said.

Netblocks, a think tank that monitors cybersecurity and digital governance, reported that its metrics indicated a disruption of Uganda's mobile operators' networks and a further collapse of internet access in Sudan.
