The IPv6 topic in Angola is not new, so much so that in 2017 during the Telecom Forum 2017 edition round table, Unitel already gave guarantees that it was working to implement it on its network, thus being able to guarantee greater security on the Internet.

During the 2023 edition of the Angola Peering Forum which took place from the 9th to the 10th of November at the Hotel Palmeiras, Ernesto Alberto (Co-Chair) from AONOG, presented the panorama of interconnection in Angola where he showed Angola's adoption of IPv6.

What does the move to IPv6 mean?

The change to IPv6 could mean more security for the Internet, as the standard has an encrypted protocol, which can identify the entire path taken by each IP. For end users, this change should not even be noticed. “This will happen invisibly."

To what extent is Angola implementing IPv6?

The adoption of IPv6 in Angola is still slow, according to the comparative map in 2020 the country had 0% regarding the implementation of the protocol, currently we are at 0,17%, according to data from Google.

However, according to data presented by AFRINIC, currently in Angola there are 23 IPv6 issued, where 78,26% which is equivalent to 18 belongs to Internet service providers, 4,35% which is equivalent to 1 belongs to one of the mobile phone operators, and the other parts of the pie belong to the undefined “Other” sectors.

AAdoption is still far below expectations in Angola, it is not possible to definitively say what the problem is for Angolan telecommunications companies to have low adoption, whether there is a need for change, but infrastructure or there are other factors for this slow process.
