Banco de Fomento Angola (BFA) issued an official note to Angolan civil society about the occurrence of fraud involving the banking institution, via email or SMS with a request to update personal data, financial information or with a request to click on a link.

BFA warns its customers to “don't fall for these scams“, stressing that “does not contact its Customers to request data updates via email or SMS” and encourages them to “keep your data safe".

Please note that more than 4,587 cases of teasing via debit cards were registered in 2022, according to the latest data from the Interbank Services Company (EMIS).

According to a Nelson Prata, President of the Angolan Association for the Defense of the Consumer of Banking Services and Products (ACONSBANC), informed that his institution registers on average one to two cases of fraud per day, where to minimize the phenomenon, it has published alerts with precise instructions so that consumers and customers do not "be fooled".

The President also said that the EMIS and the National Bank of Angola (BNA), as the managing entity of the network and licensor of the Angolan financial system, are aware of the phenomenon and are working to mitigate fraud.

"Unfortunately, those who engage in this practice of fraud also study and we are not always able to anticipate them.”, said Nelson Prata.

To avoid this misfortune, several experts and operators in the Angolan technology sector are of the opinion that digital literacy is key to avoiding fraud, something that has increased a lot in the country in recent times, as well as reinforcing security and the number of users .
