Cameroon plan to create a center for the development of the digital economy, according to the country's Minister of Posts and Telecommunications, Minette Libom Li Likeng.

The minister who spoke during an event to commemorate the winners of the 2019 National Digital Innovation Competition of the Year, said that the Center will be launched later this year, the technicians who will implement the project had just returned from Dubai, where they participated in a training program offered by Ericsson.

Cameroon wants to establish itself as an emerging digital economy by 2035.

According to the minister, the center will offer full support to young technology enthusiasts and guide them in the development of their ICT projects - from conception to maturity. Li Likeng said the center also will identify talents, incubate and develop digital economy projects, in addition to promoting the local industry for the development of “made in Cameroon” applications.

Since 2010, the country has elevated ICTs as a strategic priority and has pledged to develop its digital infrastructure and “multiply the number of direct and indirect jobs by 50” in ICTs between 2010 and 2020.

In 2019, Madeleine Tchuinte, Minister of Scientific Research and Innovation, said the government was working on the implementation of a new technology center in the capital Yaoundé to support technology startups and promote innovation.
