Citizens can already request, from the police units of the respective area, authorization for the installation of video surveillance cameras, in light of the Regulation of the Video Surveillance Law, approved this Thursday (7) by the Council of Ministers.

The Regulation establishes the technical criteria and procedures to be taken into account for the granting of authorization for the installation and use of video surveillance systems, as well as for the safeguarding of the fundamental rights and freedoms of citizens, in particular the right to image, to the reservation of the privacy, privacy and the guarantee of the right to access personal data and information held by the State.

According to the words of the Secretary of State for the Interior, Salvador José Rodrigues, he informed that people who install video surveillance systems must help the bodies that guarantee public order and security, informing them of everything they register and attempt against life and people's safety and against public and private assets that are at risk.

"Whenever law enforcement agencies and police and criminal institutions need to consult them, they must be made available to them.”, he appealed.

He also reaffirmed that the public security situation in the country is under the control of the forces of order. "All that is done today is to improve the mechanisms so that security is permanent", said.

The Video Surveillance Law (Law No. 2/20, of 22 January) establishes the legal regime for the authorization, installation and use of surveillance systems by video cameras for capturing, recording and processing image and sound, for the purpose protection of people and property.

The law applies, for reasons of public safety, to the installation and signaling of a video surveillance system, in public or private places of common use, whose external and access perimeters require special protection and in places conditioned or closed to the public.
