Facebook is losing ground among the newest users for social networks like Instagram (which belongs to the same company) and rival Snapchat. During 2017 the social network dropped 9,9% between users between 12 and 17 years.

According to the most recent study by eMarketer, although they are rival social networks and with very similar functionalities - Snapchat and Instagram, register more and more users of the same age group, users that Facebook has had problems in maintaining in the active.

The study points out that Facebook lost 2,8 million users under the age of 25 and estimates for 2018 are not much better, as it predicts it will lose 2,1 million users under the age of 25 in the U.S.

This finding may also mean, according to the projection authors, that younger users have a preference for platforms that favor visual communication.

According to the analyst Oscar Orozco of eMarketer, both platforms succeed with these age groups since they are more aligned with how they communicate with each other - with visual content.

Estimates point to Facebook losing 9,3% of users under 11 years, although the rules only allow people over 13 years is easy to get around to this "limitation". Between 12 and 17 years, you will lose 5,6% and between 18 and 24 you will lose 5,8%.

EMarketer expects Snapchat to achieve an unprecedented feat: to extend Instagram and Facebook to total teen users (from 12 to 17 years) and young adults (18 to 24) by the end of the year.
