Ghana Launches Information Technology Security Operations Center

O Ghana launched the new Security Operations Center (SOC- acronym in English), which will be part of the National Information Technology Agency (NITA), an agency under the Ministry of Communications, the center aims to protect all government digital platforms against the threat of cyber attacks.

Speaking during the launch, the Minister of Communications, Mrs. Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, noted that the new facility aims to improve operational engagement and efficiency between different Ghanaian government bodies for an effective response to cybersecurity incidents.One of the center's main benefits will be the detection of enhanced security incidents between different state agencies to ensure a secure digital space within which agencies can operate and interact.

"With advanced analytics and correlation technology to recognize threats, the center will assist in identifying patterns and prioritizing problems for optimized resources and threat management”, Affirmed the Ghanaian minister of Communications.

According to the analysis of the National Computer Emergency Response Team of Ghana (CERT-GH), malware-based attacks constitute a large proportion of all cyber security incidents reported by government ministries, departments and agencies in the country.

The analysis also revealed that the attacks reported on government websites were not limited cyber attacks, including website disfigurement, Denial of Service (DoS) and Distributed Denial of Service (DdoS), but that included leaking data through computer intrusion. and databases.

O National Cyber ​​Security Advisor, doctor Albert Antwi-Boasiako highlighted that the establishment of a Security Operations Center at the National Information Technology Agency marks progress in the government's strategic intervention to increase cyber security readiness. 

The operations of the Security Operations Center are based on prevention and the ability to detect risks and threats, as well as reducing the duration and impact of security incidents that exploit, deny, degrade or make the systems necessary for the normal operations of the services unavailable public.
