Spike TV's 2012 Video Games Awards gala took place last Friday, which is one of the main awards in the world of video games. At the end of every year, Spike TV names several titles in various categories and lets the audience vote for what they think is best. This year was above all surprising ... but I will not leave you waiting any longer. And the winners are ...
Best PC game
Diablo III
Guild Wars 2
Torchlight II
XCOM: Enemy Unknown
Winner: XCOM: Enemy Unknown
Won the only non-RPG on the list. Although this one also has elements of Hardcore RPG, XCOM is undoubtedly a big, if not the best, TBS (turn based strategy). However, it is surprising that Diablo III did not win this prize. Perhaps Blizzard should have launched the PvP arena.
Best game for Wii / Wii U
New Super Mario Bros. U
The Last Story
Xenoblade Chronicles
Zombie
Winner: New Super Mario Bros. U
Although everyone was waiting for a ZombiU victory, the plumber seems to have picked up a magic flower and managed to get another of his prized games.
Best Xbox Game 360
Assassin's Creed III
Borderlands 2
Dishonored
Halo 4
Winner: Halo 4
The expectation was great for this prize since there were 3 favorites (no one was counting on Dishonored to win). In the end the great fan base of one of the best selling games ever gave victory to the saga of MasterChief.
Best PS3 Game
Assassin's Creed III
Borderlands 2
Dishonored
Journey
Winner: Journey
Here is one of the surprises of the night. Many bet on a fight between Boderlands 2 and Assassin's Creed III, not giving Dishonored and Jorney much credit. However …
Best RPG
Diablo III
Mass Effect 3
Torchlight II
Xenoblade Chronicles
Winner: Mass Effect 3
Here another surprise as Diablo III and Torchlight II were named for the best PC game was expected to win one of those. However it was Mass Effect 3 that was neither nominated for the best game of any of the platforms to win.
Best FPS
Borderlands 2
Call of Duty: Black Ops II
Halo 4
Max Payne 3
Winner : Borderlands 2
The second biggest surprise of the night. What should be a decision between Black Ops II and Halo 4 was eventually won by Boderlands 2. Both Black Ops II and Halo 4 have a huge fan base, and in recent years both series have dominated the FPS world. Already Borderlands 2 is not an FPS itself, it is more an RPG than an FPS, which further increases the surprise in the attribution of this prize.
Best Collective Sport Game
FIFA Soccer 13
Madden NFL 13
NBA 2K13
NHL 13
Winner: NBA 2K13
It is one of the rare times when we see basketball overtake football. Many complained about the lack of PES 13 this list of nominees, but nothing would have cost for the winning sport was even the NBA 2K13, although some suspect players that many PES 13 fans voted for 2K13 NBA only to the FIFA 13 was not the winner.
Best racing game
DiRT: Showdown
F1 2012
Forza Horizon
Need for Speed: Most Wanted
Winner: Need for Speed: Most Wanted
No surprises here. Even if it was not for the best racing games to date, the overwhelming fanbase of the original game guaranteed the game's victory.
Best fighting game
Dead or Alive 5
Person 4 Arena
Street Fighter X Tekken
Tekken Tag Tournament
Winner: Person 4 Arena
There was no doubt for many people that Tekken Tag Tournament would win, it was even accepted a victory for Dead or Alive 5 or even Street Fighter X Tekken. The victory of Persona 4 Arena was shocking ...
Best action or adventure game
Assassin's Creed III
Darksiders II
Dishonored
Sleeping Dogs
Winner: Dishonored
In this category any of the titles could win, although Assassin Creed III has perhaps more favoritism, Dishonored is a fair winner for its ability to innovate.
Best multiplayer
Borderlands 2
Call of Duty: Black Ops II
Guild Wars 2
Halo 4
Winner: Borderlands 2
Here again what least expected was won. It all seemed to boil down to a choice between Guild Wars 2 and Black Ops II, with perhaps Halo 4 being able to meddle in the middle thanks to its already mentioned fan base. However, as he did in the FPS Boderlands 2 category, he surprises everyone and wins this category too. I honestly have to buy this game ...
Best independent game
Gust: An Elysian Tail
Fez
Journey
Mark of the Ninja
Winner: Journey
It would be strange if the best 2012 game of the year for PS3 was not the winner of this category, although some still hoped to see Mark of the Ninja as the winner.
And now the most anticipated prize:
Game of the year
Assassin's Creed III
Dishonored
Journey
Mass Effect 3
The Walking Dead: The Game
Winner: The Walking Dead: The Game
Here is the great surprise this year, alias of this year, not of our young century. The many who wondered what the Walking Dead: The Game game would be doing on this list even turned out to be the many who went totally mouth-watering totally zombified. Whether it is the adaptation of a franchise so popular or in fact the game to be superior to all the others that earned him this prize is something that is still being discussed in multiple forums, but one thing is recorded, it is not I need to have the latest graphics, an advertising campaign worthy of a campaign for president or even be the best selling game to be able to win in the world of video games.
Game of the decade
The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker
Half-Life 2
World of Warcraft
Shadow of the Colossus
Wii Sports
BioShock
Portal
Mass Effect 2
Red Dead Redemption
Batman: Arkham City
Winner: Half-Life 2
This category made especially for this VGA was won by Half-Life 2, undoubtedly one of the most influential games of this early century. Also if we look at the list we see that some games are missing there like Assassin Creed and GTA 4, and although the competition of World of Warcraft and Bioshock were to be taken very seriously, games like Wii Sports or Shadow of the Colossus were never titles that they can be considered worthy opponents.
More expected for 2013
BioShock Infinite
Grand Theft Auto V
South Park: The Stick of Truth
The Last of Us
tomb raider
Winner: Grand Theft Auto V
Well, this is a funny category, which measures not the quality of the games, since they have not yet come out, but rather the vibe, that is, the anticipation that the game has. Here the decision was clearly between BioShock Infinite and GTA V, and GTA V won mainly due to the fantastic new innovations that the game presents in this new delivery, such as being able to control 3 characters at the same time.
And so ends the list of the main awards for this year's VGA. The big winners of these awards are the amazing The Walking Dead: The Game, Borderlands 2 and Journey and without a doubt the main losers Diablo III, Call of Duty: Black Ops II e Assassin's Creed III who did not win a single prize.
