Single digital market could bring African countries closer together

The creation of African connectivity projects that are under development will allow Africa to be transformed into a Single Digital Market, according to the words of Mário Oliveira, the Secretary of State for Telecommunications and Information Technologies.

The director who spoke at the 5th meeting of the Council of Ministers of Smart Africa, said that connectivity from the geographical point of view of Angola has two international submarine cables (SACS and LEX), which currently play an important role in internal African countries with no outlet to the sea and facilitate flow.

Speaking to journalists at the end of the meeting, which was in virtual format, Mário Oliveira reviewed everything that was decided in the fourth meeting and analyzed a set of perspectives, projects that are part of the institution's development portfolio.

The Secretary of State also informed that the main objective of this 5th meeting is to take stock of the most prominent projects in the rectification process of the agreement that establishes Smart Africa, not forgetting the Triennial Strategy for Smart Africa 2023/2025🇧🇷 Mário Oliveira also highlighted some of the platform's projects, such as support for entrepreneurs and startups, connectivity to the African community, purchase of Internet capacity, Fund for the Development of Startups and Smart Africa Technologies.

He also clarified that the connectivity project for 2030 will mark the development of African telecommunications and information technologies, to interconnect the continent and create advantages in the Economic, Social and Commercial sectors, advancing that the Smart Africa platform covers all African countries and, in the southern African region, it is well represented due to the contribution of Angola.

This 5th Meeting of the Council of Ministers of Information and Communication Technologies (CMICT) of Smart Africa, which took place in person and virtual, in Congo Brazzaville, had the presence of representatives of AFRINIC (which is the Regional Internet Registry in the Republic of Mauritius, Zambia, Cote D´Ivoire, DRC, Benin, Zimbabwe, Kenya, Chad, Djibouti, Ghana, Sierra Leone and Egypt).

In the virtual format, the meeting was attended by Angola, Rwanda, Mauritania and Burkina Faso.

Smart Africa is chaired by the president of Rwanda, Paul Kagame, and is coordinated by Congo Brazzaville.
