A new type of cell phone with an expandable screen could become a reality in the future, at least depending on what was presented by Motorola at the MWC 2023, the largest cell phone and telephony fair on the planet.

The equipment – for now a prototype – increases in size after two clicks on a side button. It is not necessary for the user to use his hands to open or close it. The roll-up screen goes from 4 inches to 6,5 inches in a matter of moments.

This is the same model revealed during Lenovo Tech World, an event that took place in October 2022. Now the company is demonstrating for those attending the congress, held in Barcelona, Spain. According to the official disclosure, the user would have the mobility of a compact cell phone when on the move and a large screen to play state-of-the-art games, when necessary, all in the same product.

BUT: [MWC 2023] Nokia presents new visual identity to remind that it is outside the mobile phone market

The project was designed by 312 Labs, Motorola's innovation hub, and can work in three different states. According to the information released by the manufacturer, the cell phone can be presented in a compact, extended or peeked form, which should allow the user to look at small information without having to open the entire screen. The prototype, which tends to be called a rollable phone, should work with a flexible OLED or pOLED panel.

According to the official presentation at MWC, the prototype was designed to offer some functionality in an automated way. If the user starts a video on YouTube, for example, the screen should expand horizontally to create a wide format. On the other hand, if the user opens an email, the screen can open horizontally to make room for the keyboard.

As highlighted on the website 91Mobiles, this smartphone is just a prototype, without any launch forecast. Incidentally, many of these concepts do not even see the light of day, but it is a way for Lenovo, owner of Motorola, to position itself at the forefront of the technology industry.
