Nokia announces: Goodbye Symbian, now it's time.

Smartphones with Symbian OS
Goodbye Symbian universe ?!

I've written articles for years announcing the “death” of the well-known mobile operating system used by Nokia (and beyond), the Symbian OS. Somehow miraculous, Symbian always finds a way to survive. That's when Sony Ericsson (now Sony only) decided to eliminate the OS from its catalog, preferring Android. This was when Nokia itself decided to invest in Meego, Maemo and more recently in the Windows Phone. Symbian has always survived!

Note that we are not talking about low-cost mobile phones, we are talking about “smart phones”, that is, smartphones. The last great example of the love that Nokia has for Symbian, was given in the launch of the Nokia 808 pureview, the smartphone with a 41 Megapixel camera, which was not so successful. If you ask the reasons for the failure, I would try to guess, starting with the letter "S" and ...

This time, it seems that it is for once (RIP, DEP, Goodbye, Au Revoir, Auf Wiedersehen, Adiós…). Nokia is tired of fighting for Symbian and goes on to produce Smartphones with this operating system. Good news for Microsoft, who will see their Windows Phone gain projection in the company that dominated the market for 7 years ago. Now you have a chance to come up with Microsoft or sink forever.

For those who think that Symbian may still have chances of survival, here is the “slice” of the main S.O's market:

  • Android - 74,4%
  • iOS - 18,2%
  • BlackBerry - 3%
  • Windows Phone - 2,9%
  • Symbian - 0,6%

Seeing this data, would not it be better for Nokia to surrender soon and move on to Android ?!
