For the first time, data on users of the Chinese social network is known TikTok in Angola. The numbers are on the rise and there are already 3 million open profiles, 2 million less than the accounts on Facebook, which continues to be the preferred social network of Angolans with around 5 million users, 1,5 million more than on Facebook. last year, according to the January 2024 digital market analysis report from DataReportal, a platform specialized in internet connections, consulted by Expansion.

The evolution of the Chinese social network, which emerged in 2012, is “explosive” around the world and the number of profiles in the country is also growing in a spiral, threatening Meta's social network, Facebook, as the most popular in Angola. It is important to highlight that Facebook, in addition to being older (available since 2004), also has a “little help” from the operator Unitel, which continues to allow free access through version zero, with Tik Tok being launched eight years later and is only accessible with mobile data.

The third most popular social network is Messenger, which now works autonomously, and has 1,1 million profiles, which represents a growth of 43% since January 2023, according to calculations by Expansion. In fourth place is Linkedln, with 890 thousand accounts, 258 thousand more compared to last year.

Instagram is the social network that grew the most (51%) in Angola and closes the top 5 of the most popular in Angola, with more than 763 thousand accounts. In the opposite sense, the social network X (formerly Twitter) follows the trend of what is happening abroad and is falling in Angola. This is because the subscription has been paid since Elon Musk became the major shareholder of this platform. It is worth mentioning that Angolan data on WhatsApp, YouTube, and other social networks are not known.

At a global level, the Chinese social network, which curiously is not available in the country of origin (where there is a similar version called Douyin, both owned by the parent company ByteDance, based in Beijing) is prohibited from being used on government cell phones. some countries in the European Union, the United States of America and Canada, for security and privacy reasons. Still, it is a “fever” in countries where it is permitted, because of its short videos and hashtags that are becoming popular.
