every year the WhatsApp decides to leave older versions of its messaging app behind, which means that some mobile phones with older versions of Android and iOS are no longer compatible with the platform.

Rumors indicated that the next WhatsApp 'purge' would take place at the end of July, but this does not seem to be the case. Officially, it is only from October 24th that WhatsApp will remove support for Android 4.1, which means that the messaging app will only be compatible with Android 5.0 (or later versions) and also with iOS 12 (and versions most recent).

BUT: WhatsApp now lets you send instant video messages

When WhatsApp is no longer compatible with a certain version of an operating system, what happens is that users no longer have official support. This means you shouldn't wait for updates with new features, security fixes and other support.

With this in mind, users of these unsupported versions of WhatsApp should consider purchasing a newer mobile device.
