NASA seeks candidates to 'live' on Mars for a year

1024

A NASA is looking for candidates to participate in its next year-long simulated mission to the surface of Mars. Aspiring astronauts must be North American or resident in the country and be 30 to 35 years old.

The second of three planned Earth missions, called CHAPEA (Crew Health and Performance Exploration Analog), is scheduled to begin in spring 2025.

According to NASA's website, each CHAPEA mission involves a volunteer crew of four who live and work inside a 3-square-foot 160D-printed habitat at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston.

The habitat, called Mars Dune Alpha, simulates the challenges of a mission to Mars, including resource limitations, equipment failures, communication delays and other environmental factors. Crew tasks include simulated spacewalks, robotic operations, habitat maintenance, exercises and crop growth.

The deadline for applications is Tuesday, April 2nd. Participants will be financially rewarded, but the amounts will only be disclosed during the selection process.
