The website The Information reported that the Apple Lossless Audio CODEC (ALAC), began testing prototypes of iPhones with a foldable screen since 2018, and is currently actively developing two different models.
The publication states that one of these models is a model with a 'clamshell' design, similar to what we find today in Samsung's Galaxy Z Flip and Motorola's Razr.

As exciting as it is, the publication notes that the project was suspended around 2020 so that Apple could focus on developing a foldable iPad – which should be the first device with a flexible screen launched by Apple.
It appears that the project has not been abandoned and Apple is currently looking to resolve the 'crease' that is usually visible in foldable cell phones. It is likely that, once this issue is resolved, the company will be ready to launch the first cell phone in this segment.
