Web Summit Rio kicks off with Cape Verdean startups in the spotlight

"We initially expected 5.000 participants in our first year. 20.000 is something we never dreamed of happening. Our goal next year is to comfortably reach the 30.000 mark, making Web Summit Rio the most important and definitive technology meeting in South America“, He added.

From the 1st to the 4th of May, the 1st edition of the Web Summit Rio will bring together more than 900 'startups', 500 investors and more than 300 speakers. In total, more than 20.000 founders, investors, media, among others, from more than 100 countries, which sold out more than a month ago, will participate.

Cape Verde is one of the Portuguese-speaking African countries that is represented at the event with two 'startups', in a delegation led by the Prime Minister, Ulisses Correia e Silva, who will also, for the first time, be a speaker at the conference, where he will present the theme "Transformation of a Nation”.

“We are very confident that the legacy of the event, added to actions promoted by the City Hall, will be the recognition of Rio as a great center for discussions and evolution of new solutions for climate events, public safety, challenges of inequalities, market of cryptocurrencies“, said the municipal secretary of Economic Development, Innovation and Simplification of Rio de Janeiro, Chicão Bulhões, during a presentation event for the 1st edition of the Web Summit Rio in the 'wonderful city'.

According to the Potential Economic Impacts report of the Web Summit Rio, the six editions that are scheduled to take place in Rio de Janeiro, until 2028, have the potential to attract more than 800 thousand people, and should inject around 1,2 thousand people into the Rio de Janeiro economy. million reais (around 250 million euros).

The technological event, which was born in 2010 in Ireland, started to be held in the Parque das Nações area, in Lisbon, in 2016 and will remain in the Portuguese capital until 2028. The company recently announced its expansion to the Middle East , with the Web Summit Qatar scheduled for early 2024.
